Auditioning for Modern Millie

My first experience auditioning for something other than Gaylord Community Productions (or Northern Michigan University). Arlington Players is putting on one of my absolute favorites Thoroughly Modern Millie. I figure they are casting about 28 females or something like that and all I would want is a chorus role. I showed up fairly early to the audition - with my music in hand. And of course, it was after work so I was sitting in my work clothes. I was the second one to get in the door and as I was filling out my paperwork, more and more people kept showing up and that is when I realized that yes, it will be fun to be part of the theater, but does one realize how big Arlington is? And people are coming from Fairfax, maryland, and other parts of the DC area, so what are my chances? Its all fun and games anyway, so I wasn't nervous.

Wouldn't you know it - I was in the first group of females to audition and better yet, the first one to perform my song in front of a panel of judges - does this sound familiar? The pianist wasn't so good at reading fake book music so it was a little struggle to sing along with it, but I just keep going anyway. I didn't sell it like I could have - something was holding me back and I have no idea what. My expression and my voice were fantastic, but for some reason or another my feet and my hands were planted still.

Then we all went in a room to learn a basic dance combination, then had to perform it in front of the panel once again. The director was telling us to sell it and if I wasn't trying to concentrate so hard . . .

I haven't heard back from them which I am guessing that means I didn't get cast, however, they said they would call no matter what. I volunteered to help backstage or with anything else so I am hoping to do that and get my foot in the door. Its hard to be behind the scenes, but if that is what I have to do, then by all means - that is what I do.

In the meantime, keep plugging away.
